Poetry

Yesterday as a class, we briefly went over poetry and how we interpret poetry. These were some of the points that were brought up as a class.

  • Poetry is a way of telling a story in a different way
  • Poetry has many meanings
  • It is a way/interpretation for conveying emotion
  • It has more meaning than a story
  • They generally have a poetic flow, quality of beauty, rhythmic
  • Poetry uses lots of literary devices
  • As a concept, it has depth.
  • Poetry forces you to choose words very specifically - be descriptive in the space that you have
  • Any form of art
Poetry to me is a form of art; I tend to like short and simple ones because they make me think and guess, which for me is the whole point of art. To perceive it differently from others with no right or wrong answer. I don't necessarily see poems as 5 verse acrostics or texts that are centered in the middle of the page with the same opening sentences with a lot of rhyming, don't get me wrong I really don't mind those. But to me I think a poem could be a single word, or a sentence. Unlike a story it does not have to make sense or lead anywhere and that gives poetry the essence of wonder.

This is a great video, it is quite long and is very touching hope you enjoy it:
