Stitches review

Stitches Review

Stitches the novel written by David Small is a intriguing story evolving around a boy named Small. He is a mysterious character with an extremely strange family. You get to know more about Small throughout the book and you start to find out that Small has cancer and he is expected to die but Small himself doesn’t know. At the age of fourteen Small is having to face all these problems he then wakes up after a surgery and finds out that one of his vocal cords is missing and he can’t speak.

In the book Stitches there were many interesting and depressing parts. One of thee parts was when Small was shown a picture of a growth and he is scared and grossed out. He was extremely surprised and at the same time little did he know he had the same disease.
I found this part intriguing and interesting because the reader wasn’t given any hints or ideas to show that later on he would realize he had cancer and was expected to die very soon. This part of the book only came interesting after the reader was told that he had cancer because you didn’t know what was next and how that particular scene connected to an idea later on. Another reason I picked this particular scene was because of its significance and meaning which was important later on. This part was the rising action and it was an innocent random scene yet it was depressing and sad. The author did very well to hide the plot yet give a small hint and keep the suspense, which made this scene particularly interesting.

Another part of the story I enjoyed was when Small realized he had cancer and was expected to die. I didn’t enjoy this scene because it was a enjoyable part or a happy part but because this was the main conflict and was the plot. It was where the rising action lead to and where all the small connections that were made earlier on were connected to. The reason why I selected this particular part was because the story had reached its peek and was where many of the things started to get complicated. Near the main plot there were many hints that made the plot a little obvious but didn’t completely give it away. In the beginning there weren’t as many hints but many of the hints that were used connected to the plot. It was a interesting part to read and I couldn’t put it down because of all the chaos and things that were happening in Small’s life. Another reason why I enjoyed this part was because you couldn’t predict what would happen next and there were so many different things that could’ve happened and that part left me hanging and made me want to read more. He had cancer and he couldn’t speak, his family was weird and a little psycho, he had a huge slash on his neck due to the operations and from there anything could happen but in the end Small ran away at the age of 16 and manages to find a way out of life and finds a supportive adult therapist.

Stitches is a great book and keeps the reader interested and hooks them, I definitely enjoyed this book and would recommend it to readers the age of 11-14 and for those who like fictional books that include a little bit of violence with a meaningful message. Overall I really liked this book and I would rate it a 4 and a half stars because of its intriguing story line, the details and the things that go on.
